LPGA.com recently caught up with John Wright, Director of Golf at JW Marriott Wildfire Golf Club. Wright takes a few minutes out of his day to answer a few questions about JW Marriott Wildfire Golf Club. He shares his thoughts on the course layout and what we might expect to see this week.
Describe your course in one word.
Picturesque.
Are there holes that you consider your signature holes and why?
Hole 17 (tournament Hole 8) is a challenging par-4 with a water hazard on the right side of the green. A straight tee shot is required and an accurate approach is necessary. The green has multiple tiers and challenges every skill level.
Which hole on the course will the players find the hardest challenge?
Hole 12 is a long par-4 with bunkers guarding both sides of the fairway. A false front on the front-left of the green results in some approach shots coming up short. This large green can be a challenge to two-putt.
Are there holes that will create some excitement for fans?
Hole 15 is a short par-5 which allows players to get home in two. Desert runs down the entire left side of the golf hole and several bunkers guard the green. Golfers can make eagles and double-bogeys and everything between.
Are there weather conditions that affect your course this time of year?
Our rough is non-overseeded Bermuda so the colder weather keeps it dormant which poses challenges for all golfers. The rough can be relatively easy to play out of at times or it can be very difficult, but that's the penalty for hitting it in the rough.
How is the condition of the course?
The courses are in fantastic condition right now. The fairways are great and the greens are perfect and running true.
